Ignacio Mattos and Thomas Carter are opening up a branch of Estela in a new wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The popular downtown restaurant brings their menu of innovative small plates uptown.

Estela, the small plates Mediterranean restaurant in NoLita that both captured the attention of critics and nabbed the number 46 spot on The Daily Meal’s 101 Best Restaurants in America list, is opening a new location on the Upper East Side.

Ignacio Mattos and Thomas Carter are opening a sequel to their buzzy restaurant, which will probably be dubbed Estela Breuer, inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the yet-to-be-opened Met Breuer. The new location of Estela is set to join the twentieth and twenty-first century artwork that will be featured at the Breuer as early as next summer.

“It seems very attractive to bring that downtown energy uptown,” Thomas P. Campbell, the director and chief executive of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, told The New York Times. “The Met is all too often seen as this sedate, august institution.”

Campbell described the style of dining at the upcoming new Estela as “experiential” and inviting of both snacking and feasting. “It can be formal, but it can be very informal,” he said, cryptically. “It’s very much what you as the diner make of it.”

One thing the restaurant won’t be is an old-fashioned, white-table-clothed stiff experience. Estela Breuer will likely be a more chic and upscale version of a museum café with a lengthy wine list of 500 bottles (that’s 300 more than the original location).

National Museum of African American History and Culture

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is a Smithsonian Institution museum located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in the United States. It was established in December 2003 and opened its permanent home in September 2016 with a ceremony led by President Barack Obama.

Early efforts to establish a federally owned museum featuring African-American history and culture can be traced to 1915, although the modern push for such an organization did not begin until the 1970s. After years of little success, a much more serious legislative push began in 1988 that led to authorization of the museum in 2003. A site was selected in 2006, and a design submitted by Freelon Group/Adjaye Associates/Davis Brody Bond was chosen in 2009. Construction began in 2012 and the museum completed in 2016.

The NMAAHC is the world's largest museum dedicated to African-American history and culture. [4] It ranked as the fourth most-visited Smithsonian museum in its first full year of operation. The museum has more than 40,000 objects in its collection, although only about 3,500 items are on display. The 350,000-square-foot (33,000 m 2 ), 10 story building (five above and five below ground) and its exhibits have won critical praise.
