  1. Peel the rind from the 5 lemons and cut them into 1cm slices. Set the lemon slices aside.
  2. Place the lemon rinds in a bowl and sprinkle the sugar over them. Let this stand for about one hour, so that the sugar begins to soak up the oil from the lemons.
  3. Bring water to the boil in a covered saucepan and then pour the hot water over the sugared lemon rinds. Allow this mixture to cool for 20 minutes and then remove the rinds.
  4. Squeeze the lemons into another bowl. Pour the juice through a sieve into the sugar mixture. Stir well, pour into a jug and pop it in the fridge! Serve with ice.

This is wonderful, especially with Meyer lemons. Be careful with the sugar though. I started with less sugar and didn't need to add the rest. A tip to those who think this is bitter- the peel is not bitter, the white membrane inside it is. Use a sharp knife to peel the lemons and take only the colored part, not the white, and no bitterness.-03 Jul 2004

Nice taste, but one tip... resist the urge to press the peel or stir it around in the sugar. Just put it in, mix it lightly and let it alone! Otherwise the end result will be bitter. Trust me.-16 May 2001

Old Fashioned Lemon Cordial Recipe – Deliciously Refreshing!

There’s nothing as refreshing as a cool glass of Homemade Lemonade on a hot summer’s day. With summer showing no signs of waning, having a batch of Lemon Cordial at hand means you can whip up a tray of cool drinks in a flash.

This delicious lemon cordial recipe was passed on to me by my friend Dani Venn a few summers ago.

You can mix it up with plain filtered or tap water for a classic lemonade cordial drink, or combine it with sparkling water, for a fizzy refreshing thirst quencher.

This old fashioned lemonade cordial recipe is so versatile, it even makes delicious iced Popsicles. Freeze the diluted mixture in icy-pole moulds to make a cool treat for the kids.

Not just for kids! The lemony syrup also tastes fantastic in cocktails and mixed drinks, just add a shot of vodka and soda and you’ve got yourself a ‘hard lemonade’.

If you are lucky enough to have your own lemon tree at home, this lemon cordial recipe is a great way to preserve your bountiful harvest.

Store in thoroughly sterilized jars or bottles to keep your lemonade cordial for several months.

This recipe makes around 1/2 L of lemon cordial concentrate, that can then be mixed up to make around 4L of Old Fashioned Lemonade.

This lemonade recipe is tried and true. Given to me by a military neighbor back in Virginia Beach, it's honestly the best lemonade I (and anyone else who's had a cup) ever tasted.

Not super sweet, not too tart, it's absolutely thirst-quenching on those dog-days of summer, which are coming dangerously close now. And in the south, the heat is something we endure with a cup of lemonade that doesn't burn our throats. Don't you hate that? Those over-acidic lemonades kill me!

Since my family lives in Miami now, it's going to be sweltering! I was enjoying those 74 degree F days of February.

Old fashioned southern lemonade is a bit more time-consuming than my 'shake up a lemon with some sugar water' country fair lemonade, but I consider this recipe to be much better than a typical pitcher of lemonade.

I love a good glass of lemonade in the heat of spring and summer, especially while sitting out on my patio and writing out a new post.

I.e. I'm drinking a glass right now.

Let's talk lemonade techniques.

So sure, this seems like a lot for some lemons and sugar water. But! I consider these steps key to making picture (or pitcher p) perfect lemonade: the zest simmered down in the simple syrup brings out a beautiful yellow color and gives the lemonade great flavor from the zest's oils. And a lemon syrup isn't a bad thing to bottle up for someone as a gift, I'm just sayin'.

Old fashioned lemonade recipe

Whenever summer comes around and the sun finally gives us some nice heat, drinking some good old fashioned lemonade is just what everyone needs.

Now, you might be happy with the lemonade you get out of your local shop however if you’re the sort of person who likes to make their own food and drink, then you’ll want to scour the internet and some books for great old fashioned lemonade recipes.

If you want to know how to make old fashioned lemonade here are a few recipes you can start off with

  • 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • rind from 1 lemon
  • water
  • 1-1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice ( 6-8 large lemons)
  • lemon slices, for garnish
  1. In a heavy bottom saucepan, add sugar, lemon rind and water. Stir and heat over medium, bring to a low boil before reducing the heat to low. Stir until the sugar has dissolved. Cool completely (see notes).
  2. Pour the freshly squeezed lemon juice through a mesh strainer to catch any seeds or pulp. Then pour the strained juice into a large pitcher.
  3. To that add 1-1/2 cups of the lemon simple syrup and 4 cups cold water. Stir to combine.
  4. Add a few slices of lemon and serve poured over ice and garnished with an extra lemon slice.

Old Fashioned Lemonade.

Lemonade…is there a better, more favorite summertime drink? I don’t think so. And my son doesn’t think so – lemonade has been requested many, many times in the past week. Must have something to do with the heat bubble that we’re in – temperatures have been in the mid-90’s here, way too hot for my taste!

Let’s talk about my history with lemonade, shall we?

When I was little, if I mentioned lemonade, I was talking about lemon Kool-Aid. (I loved Kool-Aid, didn’t you? Opening the little packets, adding the sugar and water…it was like magic and science all rolled into one).

Then when I was a bit older, lemonade was the frozen lemonade concentrate you buy at the grocery store. A step up from Kool-Aid. Once I was making fresh lemonade as an adult, at first I was just doing fresh lemons, water, and sugar. Which was yummy, but a bit gritty, because that sugar never fully dissolved.

There’s a little trick to getting that old fashioned lemonade taste…simple syrup. Instead of doing a cup full of straight sugar, you will make a sugar syrup to add to your lemonade.

Old Fashioned Lemonade

With lemons in abundance nothing beats freshly squeezed lemon juice just seconds old.

There isn’t much to making homemade lemonade. If you have a lemon tree in your backyard you’ll probably be looking for lemon recipes, so this is a natural choice!

Literally this lemonade recipe, made the old fashioned way, just contains lemon juice, sugar and water. You will have to make up a ‘simple sugar syrup’ first however so the sugar dissolves nicely.

If you wish, you can always infuse the lemonade with some other backyard favourites, such as lavender or rosemary (although not both together otherwise the flavours will get confusing)! Literally infuse the herbs in the simple sugar syrup while simmering, but this could take as little as a few minutes otherwise they can be too overpowering. Strain, then go about completing your homemade refresher.

Once you’ve made your lemon concentrated cordial, dilute to taste. I love my Soda Stream, making ice cold bubbles on demand. It could also be delicious served with hot water on a chilly evening or if you feel a cold coming on! Cocktails, did I say cocktails? Well, use your imagination.

Old Fashioned Lemonade

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 2 cups of lemon juice (juice of approx 20 lemons)
  • 2 Tbsp lemon zest
  • sparkling water, to serve
  • sprig of mint, to garnish
  • slice of lemon, to garnish
  1. Add water and sugar into a saucepan and bring to boil, stirring well until all sugar is dissolved.
  2. Boil for approx 10 minutes, then add lemon juice and zest, then remove from heat. Allow to cool down completely then pour into a sterilised airtight jar.

Dilute to taste I used one part lemon syrup to 4 parts sparkling water. Serve with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint.

So How Do You Make Lemonade From Scratch?

Sure in theory it’s very easy to make your own homemade lemonade. Squeeze some fresh lemons, add some sugar, and dilute it with water until you have the correct balance of lemon and sugar.

The secret to a great lemonade lies in the correct ratio of all the ingredients. To much water and the lemonade becomes watery. Not enough sugar and it becomes to tart.

I’ve made it easy for you though and have done all the testing myself so all you need to do is make the recipe!

Our Sugar Syrup Base

We found that making a simple sugar syrup with 1/2 cup white sugar and 1 cup water was the perfect amount of sweetness to add to our recipe. We make this syrup ahead of time in a large batch and refrigerate it for later use.

Old-fashioned lemonade recipe - Recipes

Lemonade calls for only three ingredients. Fresh lemon juice, sugar and water. Some folks just add it all together in a pitcher (my husband) and stir, but if you do this all the sugar just sinks to the bottom, so the best way to make lemonade is to make a simple syrup.

Old Fashioned Lemonade

1 1/2 - cups sugar (I prefer Cane sugar)
6 - cups water, divided
zest of one lemon
1 1/2 - cups lemon juice (about 8-10 lemons)
additional lemon slices

In a large saucepan, combine sugar, lemon zest and 1 1/2 cups water. Cook over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved (about 4-5 minutes).

Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice. Let the syrup cool and then add the remaining water and stir. Pour the mixture into a half gallon size mason jar or pitcher and refrigerate until cold.

Serve over ice with additional lemon slices (optional). Refrigerate any leftovers.

I was just at Costco last week, and I actually bought a bag of lemons while I was there. I used them in beverages and in recipes. This looks like a great lemonade recipe. My entire family enjoys lemonade.

This lemonade looks so refreshing. It is hot out today and we are going to be getting some lemons and making this. So easy to prepare too. I am heading to the store to buy the ingredients. Even some mason jars to serve it.

My whole family loves Lemonade but we have never made our own recipe. When we visit my in laws in Arizona we always pick the lemons from their lemon tree. I am going to share this great recipe with my mother in law. I think she would enjoy it.

This is perfect for long hot summer days!

We love lemonade especially during the summertime. Actually , for me I can drink it any time of the year. I haven't tried making my own recipe , but since reading your post, I think I'll try and make my own this weekend.

I know that making a simple syrup is supposed to be the best way to make those lemonades. I have never done that before myself. Although I have made simple syrups for other recipes, including a lemoncello. I will have to try this out with my daughter.

This is like the lemonade they make at fairs that is so freaking good. I've always been a fan of making lemonade homemade rather than buying it with all that extra nonsense in it. Now I want to go get some lemons, mm so good!

Old Fashioned Hand-Squeezed Lemonade

I admit, there are some pretty good frozen lemonade concentrates out there, but a holiday like Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, just calls for something special and that means fresh, homemade lemonade to me. This one begins with a simple syrup, which really helps to provide that perfect balance between tart and sweet. Be careful not to over-boil the syrup though . you don't want to make candy!

I hope that you give this a try. Although I love using frozen concentrate in a rush, it really cannot compete with fresh homemade lemonade made from lemons you just juiced yourself. Your guests will be very impressed.

Recipe: Old Fashioned Hand-Squeezed Fresh Lemonade

Total time: 8 hour 10 min
Yield: About 6 servings

  • 1/2 cup of boiling water
  • 1-1/2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 1-1/2 cups of freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 8 lemons)
  • Zest of one lemon
  • 5 cups of cold water
  • Additional sliced lemon for garnish, optional

Make a simple syrup by bringing 1/2 cup of water and the sugar to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes, stirring regularly and heating until mixture becomes clear and slightly thickened. Set mixture aside to cool.

Using a microplane, zest one of the lemons set aside. Squeeze the juice from about 8 lemons or until you have 1-1/2 cups of lemon juice. Add the juice to a 2 quart pitcher along with the zest and cold water. Whisk in the cooled simple syrup and refrigerate overnight or for at least 8 hours. Serve in tall glasses over ice and garnish with lemon slices, if desired.

Lemon-Lime: Add in 1/2 cup of fresh lime juice and lime slices.

Pink Lemonade: Add 1/8 to 1/4 cup grenadine, cranberry or pomegranate juice, or to taste.

Orange Lemonade: Prepare as above, except reduce lemon juice to 1 cup and add 1 cup orange juice. Garnish with thick cut orange slices.

Strawberry Lemonade: Prepare as above, except process 1 pound of rinsed and hulled strawberries in a blender or food processor. Strain, using a sieve, into the prepared lemonade.

Blueberry Lemonade: Prepare simple syrup as above. Add in 1 cup of fresh blueberries, reduce to a simmer and cook until berries pop and release. Strain, using a sieve and set aside to cool. Whisk into the lemonade as above.

Blackberry Lemonade: Prepare simple syrup as above. Process 2 cups of blackberries in a blender or food processor and strain, using a sieve, into the prepared lemonade.

Peach Lemonade: Prepare simple syrup as above. Process 1-1/2 pounds of fresh peaches, peeled, pitted and sliced in a blender or food processor. Strain, using a sieve, into the prepared lemonade.

Pineapple Lemonade: Substitute 2 cups of pineapple juice for 2 cups of the water.

Honey Ginger Lemonade: Prepare simple syrup as above, except substitute 1/2 cup of honey for part of the granulated sugar and add 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger. Remove, strain out solids and let cool. Continue as above.
