A poultry recall from Pilgrim’s Pride has been updated yet again to include half a million more affected products

Most of the products in the latest update are sold under the brand Green Dragon, produced by Pilgrim’s Pride.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a second expansion of an urgent recall from Pilgrim’s Pride Corp., a Texas-based producer of cooked poultry products.

The update includes a larger distribution area, more production dates, and a total of 5,176,844 pounds of products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials. The initial recall identified approximately 40,780 pounds of products “that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, including plastic, wood, rubber, and metal,” which was then updated to include 4,568,080 pounds of poultry.

The affected products were distributed to schools and other institutions nationwide.

In the updated announcement, the USDA has identified that chicken products produced on various dates between May 2015 and December 3, 2015, may also be contaminated. These products feature a range weights, sell-by dates, and brand names including Green Dragon, Sweet Georgia Brand, and Gold Kist Farms.

The newest recall expansion appears to include mostly Green Dragon products, which includes Fully Cooked Breaded Diced Chicken Leg Meat With a General Tso’s Sauce, Fully Cooked Breaded Diced Chicken Leg Meat With a Sweet Sriracha Glaze, Fully Cooked Seasoned Chicken Leg Meat Strips With Teriyaki Sauce, Fully Cooked Breaded Diced Chicken Leg Meat With a Japanese Cherry Blossom Sauce, and Fully Cooked Seasoned Chicken Leg Meat Strips with New Orleans Brand Sauce.

3 Lessons from 2016’s Biggest Recalls (Part 1)

The only good thing about recalls is that other food companies can learn from the mistakes of others. We’ve written before about the huge impact of recalls on the entire industry, let alone the general public. But 2016 was a fascinating year for learning, so we’ve put together a closer look at some of the biggest recalls of the year (mostly in the US and Canada) and how you can avoid repeating history. Stay tuned for part two and three of this series!
