  • 50g fresh mint leaves, rinsed
  • 1 recipe limeade concentrate
  • 3 litres water
  • 500ml lemon flavoured rum
  • 8 cupfuls ice or as needed
  • 16 lime wedges, for garnish

  1. Place the mint leaves, limeade and 500ml water into a liquidiser. Pulse-blend the mixture until the mint leaves are in small pieces, but not completely pulverized. Strain the mixture into a 3.75 litre container. Stir in the rum and remaining 2.5 litres of water.
  2. To serve, fill tall glasses with ice cubes, pour in the limeade mixture and garnish each glass with a lime wedge.

This recipe was great, but I put it together a little differently. First I blended the frozen limade, rum, and mint together to make a base. Then we let people add ice a club soda to their own cups to taste. I found that a cup filled with ice and 2/3 base plus 1/3 soda was a good ratio.-06 Jul 2008

This was a great recipe for a party. It was easy and was great for a large crowd. I made the mint limeaid mixture ahead and chilled it. Then just poured over ice and topped with club soda and the lime. Much better than making individual drinks. Thanks will use this again.-12 May 2008

I made this for a group of 12 women and had quite a bit leftover. The recipe almost filled my punchbowl! It is easy and quick, but didn't give me the same thrill I get with a "real" Mojito. If I make this again, I will cut back on the water a little bit. I suggest adding the water 2 cups at a time and tasting it to see where you like it. By the time I added all the water, you could barely taste the rum.-14 May 2008

Classic Mojito

Finally! I’ve figured out how to make the perfect homemade mojito. Mojitos are bubbly rum cocktails that taste minty-fresh, citrusy and a little sweet. Club soda stretches out the flavors to create an afternoon-worthy sipper. Mojitos are ultra refreshing on warm days, and I feel like I’m on vacation every time I get my hands on one.

Mojitos originated in Cuba and I hope to taste a real one someday. We enjoyed Cuban-style mojitos in Miami over a long Valentine’s weekend earlier this year. Mojitos happen to be the only cocktail my husband will drink (he’s usually more of a beer and wine guy). I studied the bartenders’ methods while we were there so I could learn how to make them at home.

At Old’s Havana, they lined up highball glasses all the way down the bar, added a generous spoonful of sugar to each, followed by several sprigs of fresh mint (or yerba buena, as they call it). They mixed the mojitos in the glasses by the order, garnishing them with real sugar cane. I swizzled my drink and swayed to the beat of lively Latin string music playing just a few feet away. I honestly don’t know if it was an authentic or manufactured Miami experience, but it was magical nonetheless.

Outside of Miami, great mojitos can be hard to come by. Many bars don’t keep fresh mint on hand so they’ll turn down the request, and my own homemade attempts over the years have been lackluster. Now that I’ve studied and practiced my mojito technique, I’m excited to share my mojito recipe with you today!

Turns out, you just need five basic ingredients (mint, lime, sugar, rum and club soda) and a few simple tips to make the best mojito you’ve ever had. You won’t even need a shaker or simple syrup for this classic mojito recipe. Cheers!

The Perfect Mojito Pitcher Recipe

A large batch of refreshing and sweet mojitos is basically a party in a pitcher.

This bright and bold drink is perfect for serving at all of your get togethers that deserve a bit of flair. Guests will know right away they are in for a good time when you whip out a Pitcher of Mojitos brimming with fresh lime juice and mint leaves!

Whether you choose to make your boozy beverages with rum or vodka – or even as virgin mojitos – this fun recipe with homemade mint simple syrup is sure to set just the right tone for your gatherings. It’s even great for prepping in advance for a terrifically easy and amazingly delicious cocktail.

Which Rum is Best for a Mojito?

An authentic mojito (as you’d find in Cuba) uses white rum. White or light rums have a sweet, subtle flavor and dark rums which have been aged longer have a bolder flavor.

My favorite rum is Bacardi Superior, also known as Bacardi Silver. It’s a white rum that’s high quality and easy to find.

About lime juice:

Do you really have to squeeze two cups of fresh lime juice for this recipe?

The recipe calls for two cups of lime juice. If you have a lot of limes (and if you have the energy to squeeze them), go for it! Alternately, my suggestion is to use part fresh lime juice and part bottled lime juice. If you can manage to squeeze 1 cup of lime juice, use bottled for the second cup. There is a brand called Nellie and Joe’s Famous Key West Lime Juice that is perfectly fine for using for mojitos. Find it either in your market’s juice aisle or near the cocktail mixers.

Tips and Tricks for making this Mojito recipe

  • While the best mint for this recipe is the Mojito Mint, any mint will still taste great!
  • Don’t muddle the mint too much! You want to break it down to release the flavor, but not turn it into a pulp.
  • If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, just use a large glass. Instead of shaking after muddling, stir the ingredients together vigorously with a utensil.

I’m sure there are some that would say making a mojito in a blender is sacrilege, but when we’re camping, if it’s good, it’s golden. I firmly believe in putting the “campy” into camping, after all. And when any recipe involves our friggin’ awesome hand-crank blender, all the better – not to mention easier.

We enjoyed these refreshing numbers while basking in the sun over in Eastern Washington this past weekend. And if your garden is overflowing with mint like mine is, all the more reason for you to chop chop and enjoy, too!

The full origins of the mojito are lost to history all we really know is that the drink originated in Cuba over 200 years ago, before being popularized by Ernest Hemingway and other celebrities who visited Cuba prior to the Revolution.

Or do we even know that much? Eric Felten cast convincing doubt on the Hemingway connection in a 2007 Wall Street Journal column.

What is true is that modern mojito, both as served in Havana and at your neighborhood brunch joint, is often sickly sweet, assuming it's even anywhere close to the original recipe, and not adulterated with spiced rum or boysenberry jam.

Want to make the real thing? Here's what you do:

Start with mint leaves in a serving glass—spearmint, if you can get it. Add a little sugar and gently muddle, just to slightly bruise the leaves and release their oils. Squeeze in fresh lime juice. Add a dash of Angostura if you please! It balances the sweetness and adds in subtle herbal notes. Finally, add a good white rum (I like Banks Five Island) and stir. Add in some ice and stir gently to chill and mix the drink. Made with a tasty rum and the freshest ingredients, this drink transcends the cliché it may have become.

Simple syrup or simple sugar is the key to a good mojito. Why? Liquid sugar syrup easily mixes/dissolves into the cocktail instead of sinking to the bottom like granulated sugar. You can buy it, but it’s REALLY easy to make at home with equal parts of very hot water and regular sugar. That’s right 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water renders about 2 cups simple sugar.

You can make it in the microwave easily by heating a pyrex measuring cup in 30-second intervals, stirring in between.
