Galentine’s Day Dessert Board

I had the pleasure of returning to Home & Family this week to make one of my Valentine’s Day Dessert Boards and show off the art of the HEART APPLE. As always, Debbie Matenopoulos and Cameron Mathison were the most welcoming hosts!

The best Valentine’s Day Sweater

Before getting to the board, I don’t think I’ve ever received so many questions about a single item of clothing. This pink sweater was definitely a hit (color is “neon berry”).

Home & Family Segment

Now let’s get to it… The full segment is available on youtube below:

Valentine’s Day Dessert Board How-To

Step 1: gather fitting sweet treats

There are two things to think about:

  • Color palette: for VDAY that means lots of fitting red, pink, purple, white and chocolate brown items.
  • Novelty sweets: any fun love-themed treats, like heart jelly beans, heart cookies, lip gummies, etc. In particular, I like to go to Sockerbit NYC and Trader Joe’s for dye-free candies.

Step 2: place your ramekins

  • Similar to how we do with the cheese boards, I like to place ramekins first to create a symmetrical foundation (vs. being an afterthought and having them squished together).
  • Ramekins are great to corral smaller candies together.
  • For a holiday board, themed ramekins are great. These heart-shaped ramekins fit the bill.

Step 3: add in the heart apple

  • So far, Envy apples are my favorite for this trick. I try to pick out the reddest, roundest apples. See heart apple tutorial below.
  • I like to surround the heart apple with a contrasting-colored item (like the blueberries) so the heart pops.
  • Because these apples are face-down and held together, they aren’t that susceptible to oxidizing. But, if you’re looking for ways to protect your apples from browning, the traditional solve is brushing them with lemon juice, but that actually makes the apples taste bitter, so choose a sweeter citrus option like orange juice or pineapple juice

Step 4: move onto larger scale items

  • Items like cookies, brownies, larger gummies.
  • I like to line this up on the edges of the board to create a barrier for the smaller items so they don’t fall off.
  • Arrange them in fun ways around the board (fan out on edges, around ramekins, create rows) to create visual interest and varying textures on the board.

Step 5: pay attention to color distribution

Step 6: fill in the holes

Pro TIP:

are great for guests to self-serve the candy. I’d suggest putting out bags for guests to take home doggie bags with leftovers too.

The Apple Heart

For those of you that are new around here, last year, I came up with this cute way to display apple slices (in the shape of a heart) and it just might be the cutest way to serve apples you ever did see. Here’s the HEART APPLE tutorial on my IGTV:

What if I need to make a smaller serving?

My boards are often large to showcase my tips (especially on a show like Home & Family, I like to “go big or go home.”), but all these tips can be applied to a smaller board. Just choose 3-5 different sweets and arrange them on a small platter (as simple as a dinner plate) for a similar affect on a smaller scale.

Valentine’s Day Board

A beautiful candy board inspired by the holiday of love. Gather all the pink, red & white sweets of the season, and make this stunning dessert for your loved ones!

How To Create A Candy Board

It’s actually pretty easy to create a beautiful candy board. If you’ve seen my cheese boards, you’ll notice some similarities in the way I lay out the design with these steps:

  • Start by picking a color palette (pink, white, red & chocolate brown are perfect for VDAY)
  • Place a few smaller candies in bowls or ramekins around the board. In this case, heart-shaped bowls were perfectly fitting.
  • Arrange candies in fun and uniform patterns (I.e along the edge of the board or in a triangular patter)
  • Fan cookies/candies around the bowls
  • Fill in the holes with smaller candies

A few years ago, one of my daughters bought me these cute mini heart shaped springform pans. I have made so many different cakes in them. They are 1 cup size each.

On Valentine’s Day, I always make sweet treats for my grandchildren. I also try to make each meal special for my husband. Starting the day off with a breakfast board sets the mood for the day.

Begin with a 9 inch round refrigerated pie crust. I am able to get 2 mini quiche from 1 crust by pressing the dough scraps together in the pans. Set the mini pan on the pie crust and trace an area larger than the pan, with a small knife.

Press the dough into the ungreased pan. Wrap the outside of pan with foil, and place on a foil lined baking sheet. (I learned the hard way that the egg mixture can leak out)

Bake crust @ 350 degrees F for 7 minutes. remove from the oven.

Arrange the ham pieces, sausage, peppers, and baby spinach onto the crust.

To prepare the filling, whisk together the eggs, dijon mustard, hot sauce, salt, pepper, and half and half. Carefully pour evenly between the 2 pans.

Bake until egg mixture is set, about 25-30 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to set on cooling rack for about 15 minutes, remove sides and bottom disc.

Arrange the Valentine’s Day Mini Breakfast Quiche onto a wooden board, platter, or a serving tray. Fill tray with your favorite breakfast foods, such as bacon, sausage, pancakes, fresh fruits and whipped cream.

Valentine’s Themed Bulletin Boards

Bulletin boards are a staple in many school classrooms, child care centers, and Sunday Schools. They serve the purpose of decorating the classroom, displaying work, and making the room festive for holidays.

Bulletin boards that follow themes are particularly useful, as they tie in specific holidays or themes to what children are learning in school, allowing them to make projects and crafts that can be displayed on the bulletin board.

The following are some Valentine’s Day bulletin board ideas that follow themes. These are fun for kids to work on, reinforcing the things they are learning while helping to decorate for Valentine’s Day.

If you’re learning about geography in class, here’s a fun way to incorporate Valentine’s Day. Hang a large map of the US on the bulletin board. Then, have kids research the names of different places in the US that have a Valentine’s Day type name (Such as Valentine, Nebraska, or Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love.) Then, when they find one, have them write the name of the city or state on a small heart and attach it to its spot on the map. This is something you can all work on together as a class, or you can save it for a project for kids to do when they are done with their work and need something else to work on. A variation of this is to find all of the cities yourself, and then pass out the hearts and have the kids take turns putting them on the board.

A great theme for your bulletin boards for Valentine’s Day if you are working on learning insects is a “love bug.” Decorate the background of your bulletin board in pink or red. Then, have students make “love bugs” out of construction paper. Cut out the body of the bug by making a circle or oval shape and have the kids decorate their bugs however they want. Then, have kids fold squares in half and make heart. Fold the heart in half and attach it to the body to form wings. Use craft eyes for the eyes, and attach to the bulletin board. You can also put information the kids have learned about insects on the board as well.

If you have a birthday bulletin board, this theme is perfect for Valentine’s Day and the February birthdays in your class. Decorate the back of your bulletin board, then cut out hearts in pink and red. Attach photos of the February birthdays in your class to the center of the hearts, then cut out green stems from strips of green construction paper. Attach it to the bulletin board, and put a ribbon around the stems.

You can make a “love” themed bulletin board that will be perfect for Valentine’s Day. Have the kids cut out hearts from pink or red construction paper, then have them write down five things or people that they love. Let them decorate them decorate the hearts with markers, glitter, ribbon, or any other craft items you want to use. Then, attach the hearts to your bulletin board.

Bulletin boards in classrooms are an important tool for helping students learn when you use them as a theme for your lessons. These Valentine’s Day bulletin board themes will help your students have fun with Valentine’s Day while learning about different things.
